HE WHAKATAUKĪ
Te matā tū moana.
Like an obsidian rock, standing steadfast in the ocean.
This whakataukī draws inspiration from the phrase “Te Toka Tū Moana,” historically employed to describe an invincible war party akin to an unyielding rock in the ocean. The word “Matā” is deliberately chosen to resonate with “Whangamatā,” as “matā” signifies obsidian, the very namesake of Whangamatā.
The whakataukī conveys the Marae’s unwavering and influential role within the Whangamatā community. It signifies its commitment to supporting Te Ao Māori and the broader populace of Whangamatā with enduring strength and stability.
