The Past Horizon
In the 1970s, a movement was ignited, with a vision to establish a marae that would serve as a pillar of Māori culture and community.
This endeavour was not without its challenges, as the quest to find suitable sites was met with resistance from the community.
Despite these initial hurdles, the Trust’s unwavering persistence and resilience prevailed. The journey was marked by trials, including opposition and setbacks, but these trials only fuelled our determination. The Trust’s unwavering commitment over time laid a sturdy foundation. With a focus on whakawhanaungatanga, the Trust persevered to emerge in a position of strength today.
Te Pae Wātū
The Present Horizon
The fruits of perseverance have borne significant results in our present horizon of Te Pae Wātū. The Whangamatā Community Marae Trust has cultivated a deep and meaningful bond with the Whangamatā community and pivotal organisations.
Through these connections, a tapestry of relationships has been interwoven, embodying the whakawhanaungatanga principle. The close rapport established with the community has opened doors for collaboration and mutual growth.
The local council is contemplating a pivotal proposal: the whenua provision. This favourable initiative reflects the Trust’s reputation and involvement in enhancing the community’s well-being. At this juncture, we have carefully determined our strategic pou for the journey to 2030.

The Vision
Our ultimate aspiration, captured within Te Pae Tawhiti, envisions a future that resonates with our ancestors’ spirit and echoes the Māori community’s collective heartbeat.
Te Pae Tawhiti represents a utopian horizon where the Marae stands as a beacon of cultural revitalisation, a sanctuary of knowledge, and a harbour of well-being for all. This vision envisions a landscape where the principles of tino rangatiratanga, he taonga tuku iho, and kaupapa converge to create a thriving ecosystem of intergenerational connection, shared aspirations, and cultural preservation.
At the core of this vision is the profound commitment to nurturing whānau, fostering community connections, and championing the essence of Māori culture.
Through unwavering dedication and unity, we endeavour to uphold the sanctity of Te Ao Māori while providing a welcoming haven for all those who seek the embrace of our Marae.
