Community Programmes

We offer a range of programmes to bring our community together and to uplift and strengthen Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori.

Programme Information

We welcome you to celebrate Matariki in Whangamatā as we come together as a community to reflect, remember and connect.

Whangamatā will host 3 days of activities featuring workshops at the Memorial Hall and a Hāngī and concert at Williamson Park.

Hāngī tickets are on sale now at Eastern Coromandel Community Services and the Whangamatā Information Centre for $5 each

Te Reo Lessons

Programme Information

Wednesday evenings 5:15pm - 7:00pm.              Starting 12th June and running for 14 weeks (with a break for school holidays). 

Classes:

Level 1 - Beginner, suitable for those who are brand new to learning Te Reo or have a little knowledge to build on. There will be two beginner groups so one will be absolute beginners and the other will be those with some experience.  

Level 2 - Intermediate, suitable for those who have studied Te Reo before or who have some prior knowledge to build on. For intermediate level you need to be relatively proficient with pronunciation and have some vocab to work with. 

Subject material will cover te reo Māori, plus tikanga, waiata, a Noho Marae and the importance of knowing your whakapapa (so that you can create and deliver your own pepeha).

Classes are whānau friendly, children welcome.

Cost - our classes are run on a koha basis so you can contribute what you are able to. We have funding for approximately half the course costs and rely on koha for the rest. Koha payment details will be provided after you sign up.

E Tū Tāne

Wednesday 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd May 
5:30pm at Whangamatā Memorial Hall 

Programme Information

This is a four week Haka programme for tāne and rangatahi to connect to their culture, bond as whānau and as a community, and express themselves in a postive and meaningful environment.

It will take place over four evenings and will be open to any men and young men in Whangamatā and the surrounding areas (Whiritoa, Onemana, Ōpoutere, Pauanui & Tairua).

The programme will be based around learning a local haka and the tikanga, discipline and history that goes along with it.

Following on from this program there will be the opportunity to join an adult Kapa Haka group if there is enough interest.

Wāhine Toa Haka

Mondays 29th April, 6th, 13th May and Wednesday 22nd May. 
5:30pm at Whangamatā Memorial Hall 

Programme Information

This is a four week Haka programme for wāhine to connect to their culture, bond as whānau and as a community, and express themselves in a postive and meaningful environment.


The programme will be based around learning a local haka and the tikanga, discipline and history that goes along with it.


It will take place over four evenings and is open to all ages and abilities. No experience is required.  

The final evening will be a whānau night and combined with the tāne rōpū we will perform the haka.  

Community Waka Ama 

2023 - 24 Program Complete.
Will start back end of 2024. 

Programme Information

This activity provides you with the opportunity to connect socially and engage in healthy activities. Waka Ama is a great activity for health, wellbeing, teamwork and social interaction. Being out on the water in a beautiful environment is good for our mental and physical health.

This eight week programme of community Waka Ama focuses on social paddling and is inclusive of all ages and abilities.

The programme will teach paddling technique, water safety and include lots of paddling on the Whangamatā Harbour.

Māra Kai

Programme Information

Māra Kai is a community gardening programme focused on passing on ancestral knowledge of māra kai gardening. 

The goals of this programme are to empower whānau with the skills and resources to produce their own kai, and to support the local Kete Kai classes and the Food Bank with fresh local produce.

The programme will involve working bees to establish garden beds, learning karakia for planting and harvesting and a local Māra Kai expert sharing knowledge with whānau while planting, cultivating and harvesting kai.
